YIKES!

YIKES! AGE SPOTS ARE POPPING UP!

WHAT CAN I DO?

Just when you think your skin is glowing and healthy looking, bam! An age spot pops up out of nowhere! Age spots are flat spots on the skin that are brown, gray, or black in color.

They show up because of an increased production of skin pigment and typically are found in areas that get exposure to the sun. While the exact cause of age spots is unknown, doctors believe that sun exposure, tanning beds, and age are all possible culprits.

Age spots typically appear on people over the age of 40 and are usually easily spotted by a doctor. The good news is while they can be unsightly, they don’t hurt and don’t cause any health problem. In fact, nothing even needs to be done about these age spots unless you want to for cosmetic reasons.Age spots typically appear on people over the age of 40 and are usually easily spotted by a doctor. A lot of people don’t like the look of these age spots and want them gone as quickly as they appeared. There’s everything on the market from prescription medications to light treatments to chemical peels that can help rid you of those unwanted spots but if you are like us, you like to focus on ways to prevent age spots from showing up in the first place, take note of these pointers:

  • Choose to avoid being in direct sun when the rays are the most intense. That time is typically between 10am and 3pm.
  • If you do venture outdoors and are going to be basking in the sun, make sure you cover your body as best you can with UV-protective clothing. It’s a great idea to wear hats, pants, and shirt with long sleeves. They even sell hats with a flap in the back that acts as a shield for the skin on the back of your neck.
  • For skin that is exposed, apply a sun screen with an SPF of 30 or greater. Also, make sure when choosing a sun screen that it offers protection from both UVA and UVB rays. Make sure to reapply it often, especially if you’re sweating a lot or partaking in water activities.
