PROPER HAIR WASHING

PROPER HAIR WASHING

It’s something most of us do daily, yet we are probably doing it all wrong. What are we talking about? Washing our hair! Whether it’s not scrubbing long enough, conditioning the wrong parts of the hair, or not rinsing properly, chances are there are at least a few things we are doing wrong when washing our hair. We are here to help right those wrongs and get your hair looking like you just left the salon!

You Don’t Wet Your Hair Thoroughly

For starters, most people don’t wet their hair thoroughly before applying shampoo. Every strand of hair should be saturated before applying shampoo to get it totally clean.

How Much Shampoo?

Use too much shampoo and you’re literally washing money down the drain; too little and your hair won’t get clean. So what’s the right amount? For short hair, use about the size of a nickel. Medium-length hair should use the size of a quarter, while long hair should use about the size of a half dollar.

Where Do I Start?

That wonderful, relaxing head massage in the shampoo chair wasn’t intended to be a massage at all. Actually, that’s how long you should be washing your scalp. Experts say we should be scrubbing our scalps with the tips of our fingers for 3 minutes. If you have short hair: after scrubbing your scalp, finish by massaging the shampoo into your hair and rinse thoroughly. For medium or long hair: rinse and repeat, only this time, use a dime-sized amount of shampoo and massage it into your actual hair, not the scalp. Rinse thoroughly.

Not Using Conditioner or Applying it Incorrectly

Even people with fine or oily hair should use conditioner. The key here is to only apply conditioner to the bottom 2/3rds of your hair. Do not work the conditioner up by your scalp.

Who knew there was a proper way to apply conditioner? Well, there is! First, gently squeeze hair to remove any excess water. Then, apply a dime-sized amount of conditioner to the ends, working your way up the hair shaft. Apply more conditioner when necessary and make sure you really work in the conditioner. To avoid tangles and breakage, use a wide toothed comb and comb conditioner through the hair. Rinse conditioner out thoroughly.

Rinsing With Hot Water

Most of us use steamy hot water during our entire shower, but finishing your shower with cool water is best for your hair. It seals up the cuticle, which reflects light and will give off a lot of shine!

Washing your hair properly will not only allow you more days in between washes, but it will leave your hair looking and feeling great. Our Silky Cleanse and Silky Conditioner work great on all hair types and leave hair moisturized, shiny, healthy, and manageable.
