DOES YOUR HAIR HAVE ENOUGH PROTEIN?

DOES YOUR HAIR HAVE ENOUGH PROTEIN?

Have you heard all of the buzz surrounding protein and the amazing benefits it can have for your hair? Keratin is a protein naturally found in your hair – in fact, roughly 90% of your hair is made up of keratin. It keeps hair strong and helps it to grow long and healthy. Over time, coloring your hair, exposure to the elements, and other various things can dwindle away the keratin leaving your hair dry and brittle.

Some hair care products contain various types of proteins, such as silk amino acids, keratin, soy protein, and wheat protein which will restore and strengthen your hair. Be careful not to overdo it and use too much keratin however. Using too much keratin, or using it more often than you should, could leave you with the opposite result of what you were looking for: dry, brittle hair that is prone to breakage.

So how do you know what your hair needs when it seems a bit dull and lifeless? There is a cool, easy way to find out! First, while your hair is still wet after washing, grab a single strand of hair and pull apart roughly 1 inch of it between your fingers. If the hair breaks off immediately, it needs more moisture. If you try to pull it apart and it stretches really far and then does or does not break, then your hair needs more protein. If your hair has a perfect balance of moisture and protein, the hair will stretch slightly then return to its normal length without breaking.

It’s always best to talk to a hair care professional when deciding which hair products are right for you because they can help guide you with your selection and tell you how often to use the product.
