Its spring and that means one thing – time for spring cleaning (and that includes your makeup bag!). If you are like most of us, we have a drawer or makeup bag that’s packed with all kinds of makeup products, from eyeliner to lipstick. Ever wonder just how long you should keep your makeup before tossing it and buying a new one? We have the answers and they may surprise you!
Eyeliners
Pencils: 1 year or more
Pencils can last up to 3 years if you sharpen before each use. Never wet the tip as it may contaminate it.
Liquid:3 months
Liquid eyeliner can pick up bacteria and transfer it to the eye when used so be sure to replace this regularly.
Mascara
3 months
Mascara is a breeding ground for bacteria. If you notice a bad smell, it’s dried out, or it’s clumping, it’s time to toss it!
Eye Shadow
3 months – 1 year
If the shadow changes color, becomes hard, or has an odor, it’s time to replace it. As with any eye product, it’s easy to transfer bacteria from the product to your eye so make sure to wash your hands before applying shadow or use a disposable applicator.
Concealer/Foundation
Powder/Stick: 1-2 years
Liquid: 1 year
If the color or consistency changes of your concealer, time to toss it!
Blush/Bronzer
Powder: 2 years
Cream: 1 year
If your blush or bronzer changes color, toss it out. Also, if your cream blush gets a chalky layer on top, it’s time to get rid of it.
Lipstick, Gloss, Liner, and Balm
Lipstick/Balm: 1-2 years
Gloss/Liner: 1 year
If you have been sick or had a mouth/lip infection, throw out your lip product. It’s also best to get rid of the item if it changes in texture, color, smell, or doesn’t go on smoothly.
Nail Polish
Nail Polish: 1 year or more
If your polish starts to clump, thickens, or separates in color, it’s time to replace it with a new one.
