We know, you’ve been washing your hair every day for as long as you can remember, but did you know there is a right way and a wrong way to wash it? It might seem like it’s a no-brainer process but that’s not true. Using the proper hair washing techniques and products will totally transform your hair. It will make a difference in your hair’s shine, bounce, and overall hair health. When you are ‘pooing the wrong way, your hair might be getting damaged and you won’t even know it until it’s too late.
Follow these steps and you’ll be amazed at how your hair feels!
- Saturate.
Let your hair run under the water for about a minute so that all sections of hair are thoroughly saturated. Hot water will open the hair cuticle and will allow any dirt and hair product to escape. A warm water temperature also preps the hair to be ready to accept the oil that is in your conditioner.
- Apply shampoo.
Using only a quarter-size amount, apply shampoo to the scalp, focusing on the crown and nape of the neck. The hair that is closest to the scalp is always the oiliest and needs the most attention from the shampoo so always start from the roots and work your way to the ends. If you have very thick hair, you may need to use double the amount of shampoo. Be gentle as you shampoo your hair and always use your fingertips, not your fingernails. Your hair is delicate and easily damaged so take it easy. When you lather up, massage the roots. This increases blood flow to the scalp which will stimulate hair growth. Regardless of what you’ve heard in years past, do not rinse and repeat. Washing your hair once is plenty. More than once will cause damage and strip your hair.
- Apply conditioner.
After your shampoo is rinsed, gently squeeze the water out of your hair before applying the conditioner. Your hair benefits from the conditioner staying in longer so plan on keeping it in while you finish showering and rinse it off as your final step of your shower. Make sure when applying the conditioner that you apply to the ends of your hair only. Avoid putting conditioner on the roots as it could make your hair oily. Once it’s applied, twist your hair and clip it up or place it under a shower cap.
- Finish with cold water.
When you are ready to rinse the conditioner, finish off with cold water. The cold water will seal the cuticle and a sealed cuticle will reflect the most light, therefore giving off the most shine.
