For many women, it’s their worst nightmare: wrinkles! Did you know there are things you are exposed to or are doing on a daily basis that is leading to premature aging of your skin? Yes, you heard it right! Our skin appears to be aging earlier and earlier despite all of those anti-wrinkle creams that we use on a daily basis. Let’s take a look at what’s aging our skin and things we can do to turn back the clock!

1. The Sun

After a long winter, everyone is looking to get outside and catch some sun! The sun may boost our spirits and give a glow to our skin, but it is also causing wrinkles! Be sure to combat this by applying good sunscreen to block some of those harmful and damaging UV rays.

2. Facial Expressions

Every time you move your face in order to make certain facial expressions, your skin wrinkles just a little bit. Usually, when new skin cells form, the wrinkles will disappear. Making the same facial expressions over the years can lead to permanent wrinkles (think of laughing lines).

3. Cigarettes

Smoking not only smells bad and takes a toll on your lungs, but it also wreaks havoc on your teeth and skin. The fix? Try hard to break the habit or at least reduce the amount of cigarettes you smoke.

4. Sleep Positions

Believe it or not, the way you sleep can also cause wrinkles and premature aging. Sleeping on your face or on one side night after night will lead to wrinkles on that part of the face. It’s best to either rotate which side you sleep on or to sleep on your back.

5. Stress

Stress can take a real toll on your body, including your face! There’s no way to permanently eliminate stress but try to reduce it whenever you can and lessen the tension between your eyes, which will cause wrinkles.

6. Not Getting Enough Sleep

So we want you to get at least 8 hours of sleep but sleeping the wrong way can lead to wrinkles? Confusing, I know! Yes, getting 8 hours of sleep is important because less than that can lead to wrinkles so when you are catching your zzzz’s, just make sure to rotate positions a few times during those restful hours and you’ll be good to go!

7. Alcohol

When you consume alcohol, it actually causes your face to puff up and when that puffiness goes down, your skin is left stretched out and prone to wrinkles. Replace some of those alcoholic beverages with a healthier choice, like water, and your skin will thank you for it!

8. Lack of Moisture

Lack of moisture in your skin not only leads to cracking and bleeding of the skin, but it also will lead to wrinkles. This is one of the easiest remedies to help you skin – slather on the lotion! Put lotion on your body right after getting out of the shower to help seal in moisture and reapply throughout the day when you notice your skin is dry.

9. Gravity

Not much we can do about this one besides be aware that eventually, gravity will take a toll on our skin and start pulling our skin downward, leading to wrinkles. It’s important to follow the other tips in the items mentioned above and use a good moisturizer to try and keep the skin tight so when wrinkles do start from the effects of gravity, they won’t be as severe.

10. Genetics

Pay close attention to how your mother, grandmother, and aunts have aged. If they aged gracefully, you might want to take some lessons from them on how they cared for their skin. You may also be able to learn from their mistakes and know what habits you want to include in your daily skin care routine.

I know some of these items are out of your control, but there are some things you could change or be doing on a daily basis that will help stop your pre-mature aging and keep you looking young, fresh, and vibrant!
